This striking photo of a Victorian man was likely taken in the 1880s or 1890s, when the paper collar and silk bowtie were all the rage for men's fashion. When it came to hairstyles, men kept their hair and mustaches cropped even while women's hair entered the bouffant age of the Gibson Girl. Interestingly, this man wears a heart-shaped bolo on a string, perhaps a token of love from his sweetheart.
The Niklas & Co Portrait Studio was active in Chicago on 589 Milwaukee St, where the current Kennedy Expressway meets West Ohio St and Milwaukee St.
Condition: Scratched and worn but still shows great detail and texture. Drawing in pencil on back.
