Salt Hacks

In 1926, the Diamond Crystal Salt Company gave customers a “101 Uses for Diamond Crystal Salt” outlining unique functions of salt that still prove useful over a century later.

Diamond Crystal salt is known for its coarse flakes, which contain less sodium by volume and no additives like iodine. However, the salt “life hacks” in this book work with any kind of salt, and they’re not just useful in the kitchen!
Though some of these "hacks" may sound strange to modern readers, these hacks bring attention to the problems and risks homemakers faced in the 1920s. Fires, spoiling food, or night lights might not seem important in the age of smoke alarms, fridges, and electricity, but they were potentially dangerous circumstances for people back then. Our blog focuses on why these hacks work but also on why they mattered back in the day!
Follow our #salthacks series on the Vintage Wisdom blog for more salt applications from a century of household life hacks!
