This adorable black-and-white photo of two children is a beautiful example of 1890s children's fashion and hairstyles! The layered, ruffled dresses on both children showcase the beautiful, lacy collars of children's fashion in the era. The large bow in the older child's hair was typical of young people at the time, and her matching collar is secured with a brooch, perhaps a family heirloom. The younger child could be a boy or girl, as very young boys of the time wore the same dresses as girls. Mothers were holding onto to their precious babies as so many did not make it.
The oval frame, typical of the 1870s, fits the hand-cut black-and-white photo well, but it is clear that this photo is from the 1890s, when black-and-white photography was introduced to American photographic studios.
