On front: Whirlpool Rapids, Niagara Falls, N. Y. 
On back: Whirlpool Rapids are caused by the narrowness of the Gorge and the shallowness of the river at this point. The river suddenly changed from a broad placid pool to a roaring avalanche that eats the water into white foam and spray.
