This Sepia Toned photograph of a Victorian woman with brown curly hair and a buttoned dress showcases the intersection of no-nonsense Victorian dressmaking and the elaborate accents used to "dress up" the hand-tailored dresses. Before mass production of textiles and clothing, dressmaking outside of major cities stuck to practical fabrics. However, for fancy occasions like portrait photography, women adorned themselves with elaborate lace collars, delicate earrings, and intricate hairstyles.
Allen's Excelsior Photographs operated in Dexter, Michigan, from 1865-1881, where Norman E. Allen offered photographic advice and frame-to-order photographs, eventually introducing life-size enlargements of photos.
Condition: near perfect with minor stains and slightly curved from age.
