This is an interesting photo of a pre-teen girl in a patterned dress. She resembles a pre-teen from today, with her " I do not wish to smile" expression plus, the "I may just bolt from this chair" body language. The tintype was hand tinted to give her a rosie cheeked look As hard as it is to believe, this photo may have been taken, because her parents were already thinking of her potential as a bride. Young women in the med 1800s were often married off by 15 to much older men, who promised the parents to give her economic security in exchange for a young fertile bride.
