Back Information: "The Old Customhouse was built by the Spanish in 1814; additions were made by the Mexicans and Americans as each in turn controlled California. Here Commodore Sloat first raised 'the Stars and Stripes' formally taking possession of California for the United States in 1846. It is the oldest Governmental building in California and is now used as a historical museum."
