Back: THE MACKINAC BRIDGE . . . This 100-million-dollar bridge is the world’s longest suspension bridge. The five-mile span over the Straits of Mackinac will link Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Even main cable is 24 1/2 inches in diameter with 12,876 wires in each cable, with a total length of 41,000 miles of wire. The center span is 3,800 feet long between two towers that are 552 feet above the water.
