Though some call this desert country with its dreary stretches of sand and alkali, bare and rugged rocks, knotted and twisted yucca, and occasional mirage, reflected by the hot and unproductive waste, a region God forgot; and though human habitations are few, there is an irresistible charm in the mountains, the sky, and the sun on gleaming sand, and in the afterglow when the sun has gone down, that attracts even the least sentimental when he comes into this silent land.
