Back Text: "One of the liveliest streets in the Danish Capital is the Vesterbros-Passage, at the end of which rises the Friheds Stotte or Column of Liberty an obelisk of sandstone, 50 feet high, erected by the peasantry in 1778 in commemoration of their emancipation from serfdom. It is ornamented with four allegorical figures representing 'Fidelity,' 'Bravery,' 'Patriotism,' and 'Rustic Diligence.' The obelisk was marked by the enemy's ball during the bombardment by the English in 1807."
