The Bivouac of the Dead - The Tomb of the Unknown Dead, Arlington, VA.
Back Information: Colonel O' Hara's classic verse is the noblest martial elegy in the language, the lines have in them the measured tread of the funeral march, the solemnity of the sacred surroundings, the hallowed hush or Arlington. The quatrains, lettered in brass on tablets here and there through the grounds speak for us the spirit of the place. Colonel Theodore O' Hara served throughout the Mexican War in the regular army. During the War of the Rebellion he served in the Confederate Army. This celebrated poem was written and read by O'Hara in 1847, on the occasion of the reinterment at Frankfort, of the volunteer soldiers of Kentucky who had fallen in the Mexican War. Colonel O'Hara is buried at Frankfort, Kentucky.
