This photo showcases a young woman wearing a Nursing Education Cap and holding her degree. At this point, droves of American Women were becoming nurses and teachers. They saw education as a career until they married the right man. This young lady wore a beautiful white, Edwardian-style dress and proudly held her head high; she was now officially educated.
It is interesting that women were not admitted into most colleges well into the 19th century -- even at the turn of the 20th century, only 58% of U.S. schools admitted men and women together,, but nursing and teaching were acceptable degree programs, especially when the nursing program ran out of a hospital, training the women while the worked. What a perfect gift for a women's studies or history grad....or to post in a college counseling office.
