Unique Victorian Family Photo with Pets - Pre-War German Wealth - 1890-1910 Cabinet Card - Wilhem Cooper Berlin

This animated portrait of a husband, wife and child, accompanied by their pets reflects the wonderful world of Victorian fashion in Germany. As the capital of the late-19th century German Empire, Berlin saw rapid growth and modernization, with Mark Twain calling it "the European Chicago". 

The unique and elaborate stage set by this family begins with an ornate palace-like background,, with swirls and twirls adorning the pillars, a marble floor featuring a delicate pattern matching the chair where the woman is seated.  Her long, dark satin gown is decorated with ruffles and a lace collar, but she retains the simplicity of Victorian motherhood. The baby on her lap is clothed in a dressing gown, and the husband, dressed in an elaborate brocade suit looks lovingly down at his child, Most striking is the parrot perched on his hand, while the family hunting dog sits at their feet,. The photographer Wilhelm Jacob, based in Berlin, normally took photos of soldiers and guardsmen; this photo is much more elaborate and family-centered compared to the stoic soldier photos. Condition: Mild peeling and discoloration at the corners, with a crack running down the middle of the back, taped by a previous owner. The crack is hardly visible in the busy photo. Adhesive residue from previous mounting.
