This lovely lady, listed as Lillian Williams Knaffle [sic], was photographed by famous photographer Joseph Knaffl in the 1880s -- likely because she was his wife. She is clearly well-to-do, as her ethereal pleated lace collar would indicate, and she looks regally at the camera as her photo is taken. Lillian's beautiful curly hair is tied in a bun atop her head, and the lighting gives her curls a heavenly glow.
Joseph Knaffl, of Austrian origin, opened a studio in Knoxville, TN, with his brother Charles in 1884 and opened another in 1909. His style was heavily influenced by classical art, and his most famous photograph is the award-winning "Knaffl's Madonna". The Knaffl + Bro. studio offered high-class photography of Knoxville elite and advertised their "instantaneous process" of photography along with a unique dual-lighting technique.
