Elegant Gothic Victorian Woman - 1890-1900U Unique Size Panel Card - J.B. Allison, Indiana Photo

This striking young woman adorned in Victorian finery  is looking pensively into the camera. Her stunning hat catches the eye, with its silk or linen folds defying gravity and resembling a sculpture. Taking inspiration from the dramatically bird-topped hats of Victorian fashion, but keeping the newly-formed Audubon values in mind, this woman piled fabrics atop her hat for dramatic flair. Her fur scarf draws the viewer to appreciate her expensive coat and the trail of fur following  down the front -- although the feather trade was no longer en vogue, fur trapping was obviously alive and well! 

This card and the photo are an interesting size, with the card measuring over 8 inches in height and only 4.5 inches in width. No documented cabinet card matches this size, meaning the card mount was likely custom-made for this fancy lady!

The photographer's name and studio, embossed on bottom left of card, indicates that this was taken by J.B Allison of Fortville, IN. He was active at this studio after 1901.

Condition: the folder has mild discoloration, creasing, and colored paint stains on card front and back, with adhesive residue on back. Torn top right corner and wearing on rounded corners. Staples in top and bottom from previous mounting.  The Photo itself is remarkably well-preserved.
