This pretty young girl, obviously from a family well to do family, perches cheekily in a wicker chair. She is surrounded by nature-like scenery, but we know these are fake props due to the limitations of photography at this time -- photos were always taken at an indoor studio, but that didn't stop people from introducing elaborate props like this nature scene with blooming bushes and grass underfoot. Her white collar and matching pouf sleeves depict and shiny ringlets tied with a big bow depict the quiet elegance of late Victorian era girlhood.
The photograph itself showcases the black-and-white photographic style of the later 19th century, and the bottom of the mount card features an imprinted logo for Newman photography, a studio in Philadelphia. The embossed cardboard frame was introduced in 1894 as a fancier alternative to traditional cards, and black was the most enviable, luxurious color.
