This beautiful Iowa baby had her photo taken in her Sunday best around 1890. Perched in an elaborate wicker chair, this little one may likely be celebrating her christening, a celebration often commemorated with a photo. Many children never survived to this age, thus parents felt safe to commemorate the occasion -- this has an embossed frame, leather patterned card, and a wicker throne as her photo prop!
The photograph itself showcases the black-and-white photographic style of the later 19th century, and the bottom of the mount card features an imprinted logo for Clifford and Son photography, active in Muscatine, IA around 1893. The beveled cardboard frame was introduced in 1892 as a fancier alternative to traditional cards, and black was the most enviable, luxurious color. Embossed framing designs, too, were introduced in 1894 and defined the style of photos from this time.
