Back: OLD FORT MICHILIMACKINAC 1673-1761 Occupied by friend traders and troops. 1761-1763 Garrisoned by English troops, June 4th, 1763. During a game of Bag'gat'iway, a game similar to Lacrosse, between the Chippewa and Sacs Indians. By the Walls of the fort, the Indians gained admission, and after capturing the fort, massacred the garrison, with the exception of the commanding officer and several Indian traders. These people witnessed the killing of the unfortunate members of the garrisons, the eventually made their escape and reached Detroit safely. Reoccupied by the English in 1764 and Abandoned in 1781. 1932 Location of the old fort was definitely established, and the state of Michigan started the work of restoration. Today the stockade stands upon the exact site of this historic old fort, and within its walls sleeps the massacred English Garrison. Note within the walls the several different types of early Log cabin, showing both French and English construction.
