Back: BROOKLYN, MANHATTAN, and Williamsburg Bridges span the East River, connecting the Boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The oldest and the first constructed is the Brooklyn Bridge; begun in the 1870 and open to traffic in 1883. The Manhattan Bridge has a river span of 1,470 feet and a total length of 6,855 feet, the towers are 322 feet above mean high-water tide. Cost was $24,000,000. The Williamsburg Bridge is the greatest suspension bridge int he world with a channel span of 1,600 feet and a length of 7,2000 feet between terminals; width, 118 feet.
