"The Pueblo Indians believe Man originated inside the earth and came out through an opening called Ship-Ah-Poo. Their Kivas or Ceremonial places are constructed to commemorate that myth. Turret shape, they cover large subterranean room, the only entrance being by means of a ladder through the roof. Here all important councils are held, and all dances and ceremonies begin and end. In the distance is Black Mesa, where the San Ildefonso Indians made their last stand against the Spanish Conquistadores."
