Back: Rutgers University was founded in 1766 as Queen's College. It was established by the Dutch settlers of New Jersey who desired a college of their own at which to educate their sons. In 1825 the name of the college was changed to Rutgers in honor of Col. Henry Rutgers of New York, a benefactor for the Institution. Rutgers became the Land Grant College of New Jersey under the designated as the State University of New Jersey.
