"Jackson Statue set up in 1846 at the cost of $30,000. Henry Clay made the dedication speech. The artist Clark Mills has been highly praised for the poise of the figures, which conjointly weigh 20,000 pounds. The inscription on the granite base was cut by General Butler's orders during the Civil War. It reads: "The Union must and shall be preserved."
