Back: GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE, opened to traffic October 25, 1931, spans the Hudson River between the Palisades of New Jersey and Washington Heights, New York City. IT is a steel suspension bridge, with a roadway 3,500 feet long between towers 635 feet high, the roadway being 250 feet above water and held by four 3-foot steel cables. The cost of the bridge is $60,000,000, and it was financed and built by the Port of New York Authority.
