Back: “Go to Key West.” In these simple words in 1904 Henry Morrison Flagler, aged 75, ordered his bright, young engineers to do the “impossible,” to extend his Florida East Coast Railway through t he Everglades and across the hurricane-torn Florida Keys. Behind his “folly” was a plan to develop the little fishing town of Key West at the end of the line into a a major new Caribbean port. This rare postcard is from The Railraod that Died at Sea, by Pat Parks.
