Back: Second terrace of garden behind Connelly’s Tavern on Ellicott’s Hill, built prior to 1795 during the Spanish era. It was here in 1797 that Major Andrew Ellicott, emissary and close friend of George Washington, unofficially and in defiance of Spain, raised the flag of the United States for the first time in the lower Mississippi Valley. Preserved by The Natchez Garden CLub and open to visitors during Annual Pilgrimage the latter part of March.
