Salt Hack of the day:

A bucketful of salt water should always be kept on hand for fear of fires – the more salt the better. This is usually very effective when fires first start. In case of threatened fire in the flues, dry salt thrown into the stove is often very effective.

Why it works:

Salt is great at absorbing heat and smothering the oxygen source in fires, plus it doesn’t catch fire itself. (source) Plus, it can be used on grease fires as well as chimney fires. (source)

Why it matters:

Fires were common in home kitchens before smoke detectors and smart kitchens, especially in houses made of timber. Whether wood-, coal-, or gas-powered, stoves and ovens posed fire and burn risks to the people using them every day.
