Late Victorian Era Photograph of Mother and Child - Vintage 1880s-1890s Women's Fashion Cabinet Card

This photo of a Victorian Mother and Child gives some insight into the changing fashion and shifting roles of women in the household. The mother's cinched waist, thin sleeves, and starched collar and cuffs reflect the more modern woman's shift away from earlier Victorian bustles, fringe, and patterns. The introduction of shirtwaists as a practical women's top indicated a more masculine style emerging. Her ornate belt buckle is more practical and affordable than a brooch or hairpin, and it adds a central element to her relatively understated outfit. Meanwhile, the child is in a christening gown abundant with ruffles and trim, which stands in stark contrast to the newly simplified women's wear.
