This older woman is posed for a photo where she is the star of the show! Perhaps her family wanted children to have a photo of their grandmother or the family matriarch in the latest photographic style.
Her very thin, fashionable collar and pulled-back hair indicates that her sense of style was from the 1860s. However, large oval pictures became popular in the 1870s-80s, when technology and photo resolution improved. Her jewelry particularly stands out as precious, with the collar buckle and belt buckle being encrusted in crystals and the necklace bejeweled in a dainty bolo style.
