On back: Nauvoo Visitors Center, Nauvoo, Illinois Mormons crossing the frozen Mississippi, February 1846 . Grant Romney Clawson based this painting on an earlier depiction by C. C. A. Christensen. It visualizes a period commencing February 27, 1846, when the temperatures dropped below zero and the river froze over in three days sufficiently to support loaded wagons. Several hundred Mormons crossed to Iowa before the ice bridge collapsed after a days.
