Back Information: Cleveland was founded in 1796 by General Moses Cleaveland , one of the stockholders and directors of the Connecticut Land Company, purchasers of 3,000,000 acres of the Connecticut Western Reserve, General Cleaveland was at the head of a party surveying this property. Writing home to his associates, he said that a village had been established on the banks of the Cuyahoga River and given his name, which he expected some day to see as large as Old Windham, Connecticut.
